Dr. Jay Butler

Jay Butler, MD, FAAP, FACP, joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Diseases (NCPDCID) Division of Emerging Infections and Surveillance Services (DEISS) in June 2009 as a Program Director to assist with the nation’s response to the H1N1 virus (swine flu) outbreak. Before returning to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, he served as Chief Medical Officer for the State of Alaska since 2007.  Previously, Dr. Butler was the Director of the Alaska State Division of Public Health, and headed the division’s Section of Epidemiology. From 1998 to 2005, he was Director of the CDC’s NCPDCID/DEISS Arctic Investigations Program and also served as an infectious diseases physician at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. Prior to Alaskan assignments, Dr. Butler was a CDC epidemic intelligence service officer for the Wisconsin Department of Health.  He is board certified in general internal medicine, general pediatrics, and infectious diseases. Dr. Butler earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina, and completed residencies in internal medicine and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University, residency in preventive medicine at the CDC and fellowship in infectious diseases at Emory University.
